“So, what the fuck is up with you?” Jack asked pointedly when Logan came upstairs for the meeting.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Logan told him, not wanting to get into it with Jack.
Logan was under enough stress as it was. The last thing he needed was Jack on his case.
Jack leaned over the kitchen counter where he was setting up the equipment so that they could do the meeting remotely. He knew that something was up. The two men had been friends for too long.
“I call bullshit. You’ve been moody as hell, and we’ve been butting heads since you’ve arrived. You’re going to have to tell me what’s going on, or I’ll have you pulled from this mission.”
Logan could feel his blood pressure rising. There was no way in hell he was going to leave Keira, so he was going to have to give Jack something. Jack may technically be Logan’s boss, but they were also friends. How was Logan supposed to tell him that he had fallen big time for Damien Amherst’s daughter?
Luckily—or unluckily, depending on how you saw it—Jack was pretty astute.
“You’ve got a thing for the Amherst girl. Don’t you?”
Damn it.
“It’s complicated,” Logan finally admitted.
Jack shrugged.
“Not complicated to me. Have you slept with her yet?”
Logan bristled.
“None of your damned business!”
“I’ll take that as a ‘No’ then.”
Logan clenched and unclenched his fits, wondering whether it was worth it to get fired if he decked his boss. He certainly wouldn’t have been the first person at Gray Tower to fantasize about it. Despite their friendship, Logan sometimes had a hard time dealing with Jack’s abrasive personality.
“Look, I get it. She’s attractive,” Jack continued. “Don’t think I haven’t noticed that. I’m just a bit concerned that you aren’t focused on this assignment.”
“I’m fine.”
Jack raised an eyebrow.
“Just keep your damned head in the game. Either get her out of your system or get her out of your head. Got it?”
“Sure. Whatever.”
The two men stared at each other for a moment before Jack smiled slightly and slapped Logan’s arm a few times.
“Are we good?”
“Yeah, we’re good.”
“Great,” Jack said, looking at his watch. “Because it’s almost time for our meeting.”
There were a few more moments where Jack continued his set up. Logan wondered briefly how Keira was doing without him but decided to push her out of his head and concentrate on the task at hand.
At the appropriate time, the screen from the other end showed Miles Bryant himself and in the subsequent screens, his administrative assistant, Alexandria Thorn and, of course, Brenden.
They were sitting at a conference table in a concrete gray room with no decorations. It would be many more months before the new Gray Tower Headquarters would be finished.
“Gentlemen,” Bryant greeted them.
He was in his early fifties, average height with a handsome face and dark brown hair. Bryant commanded attention wherever he went. He wore a traditional dark suit, his hair cut close to his head, which was typical for him.
Alex stood by him in a pencil skirt and blouse, tablet in hand.
